The operation of a rotary evaporator follows a logical, multi-stage process. It begins with the rotation of the evaporation flask, which contains the sample solution. This motion creates a thin, continuous film on the flask's interior walls. Simultaneously, a vacuum pump reduces the system's pressure.
The combination of this reduced pressure and gentle heating from the bath causes the solvent to boil and vaporize at a temperature significantly below its normal boiling point. This low-temperature evaporation is crucial for preserving heat-labile compounds. The solvent vapor then rises and enters the condenser. Here, a coolant circulates, chilling the vapor and causing it to liquefy. The resulting pure solvent is collected in a separate receiving flask, while the concentrated product remains in the rotating flask. This seamless process ensures efficient separation.
