Introduction about autoclave
An autoclave is a pressurized device dedicated to achieving sterilization through the application of saturated steam. The principle leverages the fact that moist heat is more efficient at killing microbes than dry heat at the same temperature. By operating at pressures of 15-30 psi, steam temperatures of 121°C to 134°C are readily achieved and maintained.
The sterilization cycle is a controlled process: air removal, steam exposure, and exhaust/drying. This makes it essential for reprocessing surgical and dental instruments, sterilizing laboratory glassware and media, and treating biohazardous waste. Industrial uses include curing rubber and growing synthetic crystals. The autoclave is favored because it provides a reliable, monitorable, and non-toxic means of achieving sterility. Chemical indicators and biological spore tests can verify cycle efficacy.
The condensing nature of steam ensures excellent heat transfer and penetration, allowing it to effectively sterilize wrapped items and instruments with internal channels. Its broad-spectrum efficacy, capable of eliminating all microorganisms including spores, makes it the most comprehensive and trusted sterilization method for heat- and moisture-stable materials.
